It's finally here --- COLD weather in Central Texas! ❄⛄️

Winter Safety Tips for Your Pets

As temperatures drop and winter settles in, it’s essential to ensure the safety and comfort of your pets. Winter weather can pose unique challenges, but with proper preparation and care, you can keep your furry friends healthy and happy throughout the season. Here are some important tips to help you protect your pets during winter:

1. Limit Outdoor Time ⌚️

Cold weather can be just as dangerous for pets as it is for humans. Limit your pet’s exposure to frigid temperatures, and never leave them outside for extended periods. Even breeds with thick coats can be susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia.

2. Bundle Them Up

Short-haired or small pets may benefit from a sweater or coat when venturing outside. Make sure the clothing fits well and doesn’t restrict movement. Check for dampness frequently, as wet clothing can make your pet colder.

3. Paw Protection

Snow, ice, and de-icing chemicals can irritate your pet’s paws. Consider using pet-safe booties to protect their feet, or wipe their paws with a warm cloth after outdoor walks. Be sure to check for cracks, redness, or stuck ice between their toes. We offer Kin+Kind Nose & Paw Natural Moisturizer ?

4. Avoid Antifreeze  ☣

Antifreeze is toxic to pets and has a sweet taste that may attract them. Clean up any spills immediately, and store antifreeze and other chemicals securely out of your pet’s reach.

5. Provide Warm Shelter

It’s always best to bring pets indoors during extreme cold spells, but if your pet spends any time outdoors, ensure they have a dry, insulated shelter that’s out of the wind. Bedding like straw or blankets can help keep them warm.

6. Adjust Their Diet

Pets that are more active outdoors in winter may need extra calories to maintain their energy and body heat. Conversely, indoor pets might require fewer calories due to decreased activity.

7. Hydration Is Key

Fresh, unfrozen water should always be available. Check outdoor water bowls frequently to ensure they haven’t frozen over. Dehydration can be a concern even in cold weather.

8. Be Mindful of Older or Ill Pets

Cold weather can exacerbate conditions like arthritis. Provide extra bedding and warmth for senior pets or those with chronic health issues.

9. Watch Out for Ice and Slippery Surfaces ❄️ ❄️

Slippery sidewalks can lead to injuries for both you and your pet. Walk carefully, and avoid icy patches when possible.

10. Stay Visible

Shorter days mean more walks in low light. Use reflective collars, leashes, or clothing to ensure both you and your pet are visible to drivers and others.

By taking these precautions, you can help your pets enjoy a safe and comfortable winter season. Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for them. Keep an eye on their behavior and well-being, and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice if you have concerns.
